Professor Prokofiev has obtained his Masters in Physics from the St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University in 2001 and his Ph.D. in particle physics from the University of Zurich in 2006. He has  pursued his post-doctoral studies in several universities and research laboratories, including the Unifersity of Sheffield, New Yourk University and INFN Frascati.  In 2009-2011 he was a CERN fellow. Professor Prokofiev has joined the Department of Physics in 2014 as the Research Assistant Professor and Junior Fellow in the Institute for Advanced Study and became Assistant Professor in 2020.
Research Areas
The research of Professor Prokofiev is dedicated to experimental studies of the Higgs boson properties. In particular, to the investigation of its couplings to the Standard Model bosons and fermions. The Higgs sector is currenty one of the least studied corners of the Standard Model. Careful invesigation of its properties might shed light on the yet undiscovered new physics beyond the Standard Model. In the absence of the direct discovey of this new physics, the Higgs sector studies may be our best chance to  make first steps towards understanding the observed baryon assymetry of the Universe and the existense of the Dark Matter.

For nearly last two decades Professor Prokofiev is contributing to the activities of the ATLAS Collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Currently, his group is participating in re-building of the ATLAS semiconductor silicon pixel detector for the High-Luminosity LHC programe. A laboratory, dedicated to testing and development of detector components has been recently established in HKUST.

Apart from the LHC physics, the research interests of Professor Prokofiev focused in studies of physics potential of future accelerators, neutrino physics and relation between particle physics and cosmology.
